Set in 1891, Broken follows Monette, a nineteen-year-old young woman whose life has been shattered by loss. After the death of her parents, she finds herself struggling with grief, isolation and a reality that becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from her own mind. When Monette is institutionalized and diagnosed with “hysteria,” she is placed under the authority of Dr. Wilbert Kaleta, a man who claims to understand her condition but gradually becomes a symbol of the power and control imposed upon women who refuse to fit society’s expectations. As Monette's time in the asylum progresses, the line between memory, hallucination, and reality begins to disappear. Haunted by loss and surrounded by a world determined to define her as broken, she must confront the darkest parts of her mind and ultimately find her own form of freedom. Broken explores mental health, grief, female oppression, love, loss, and the ways society can label women as “hysterical” when their suffering is misunderstood or inconvenient.
