Essence and existence in Leibniz's ontology

Leibniz espouses a gradualistic metaphysics which is committed to a necessitarian view of the real world and to a conception of degrees of existence. Yet he refrains from openly embrace both consequences, which causes quite serious difficulties for a coherent construal of his views.
