The Merchant of Venice is among William Shakespeare’s most renowned comedies, written between 1596 and 1598. While the play features humor and romance, it also tackles deeper themes such as justice, mercy, prejudice, and the complexity of human relationships. The story follows Antonio, a Venetian merchant, who borrows money from the Jewish lender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio court Portia, a wealthy heiress. Harboring a grudge against Antonio, Shylock demands a “pound of flesh” as security for the loan.Bassanio ultimately wins Portia’s hand through a clever casket test, but the conflict between Antonio and Shylock reaches its peak in a dramatic courtroom scene. Disguised as a lawyer, Portia ingeniously argues that Shylock may take his pound of flesh—but no blood may be shed—saving Antonio and turning the situation to her favor.
