In the later years of the 16th century, the Catholics and Protestants of Alès experimented governing the town together, “ in peace and in amity ”. They established a “ mi-parti ” (half and half) Consulate, in which all municipal offices were shared equally among inhabitants of either faith, using complex procedures based on a combination of voting and balloting. Consolidated by “ oaths of union ” between both parties, these institutions worked successfully enough from 1598 to e. 1615. After 1615, and particularly after 1621, a renewal of religions strife gave rise to increasing difficulties, and the “ firm ” Protestants ousted the Catholics from the municipal government, at the same time opposing the moderate Huguenots. Exceptional structures, controlled by followers of the Duke de Rohan, replaced the traditional institutions. The latter were reestablished in 1629 after the town surrendered to the royal army, but from that moment on they enjoyed no more than nominal authority.
